Privacy policy

This page explains what personal information Bhuka collects, why, and what you can ask us to do with it. We've kept it short and in plain language.

Who we are

Bhuka is a booking app for businesses that sell classes, workshops, courses and events on Shopify. Bhuka is run by Keagan Petersen in Cape Town, South Africa (“Bhuka”, “we”, “us”). For the Protection of Personal Information Act (POPIA), we are the responsible party for the information described here, and Keagan Petersen is our Information Officer.

What this policy covers

It covers bhuka.pages.dev (including our free resources, like The Eish Kit), our Instagram (@bhuka.app) and Facebook pages, the forms we run on Facebook and Instagram, and messages you send us. When the Bhuka app is available to install, the app will have its own privacy notice for store and customer booking data.

What we collect

• When you sign up for a free resource on this website: your email address (we need it to unlock the resource) and, if you choose to give them, your first name and the kind of business you run. We also record whether you ticked the box to receive our emails, the date, and where you found us (for example Instagram). These go into a Google Sheet that only Bhuka can open.
• When you fill in one of our forms on Facebook or Instagram: your name, email address, phone number and business name, plus your answers to our questions (for example, what kind of sessions you run and whether you sell on Shopify). Meta may pre-fill some of these from your profile; you can change them before you submit.
• When you message us: your name or username and whatever you choose to tell us.
• When you visit this website: we don't collect anything else ourselves. The live demo uses made-up sample data and saves nothing. The free kit remembers that you've unlocked it, your first name if you gave it, and your one-page business plan answers, in your own browser only. We never see your plan. Our host, Cloudflare, keeps standard technical logs (such as IP address and browser type) to run and protect the site, and the fonts load from Google Fonts, which also sees your IP address.

How we use it

• To contact you about Bhuka: to answer your question, show you how it would work for your business, or tell you when you can start using it.
• Only if you ticked the (optional) box when you signed up for a free resource: to email you our free tools and small-business tips, about two a month. Every email says who it's from and how to unsubscribe. If you didn't tick it, we won't send you marketing emails.
• To understand which kinds of businesses are interested, so we build the right things first.

We won't send you marketing you didn't ask for, and you can tell us to stop contacting you at any time.

Who we share it with

We don't sell, rent or trade personal information. It is only handled by the services we use to run Bhuka:

• Meta (Facebook and Instagram), where our forms and messages live.
• Google, for email, the sign-up sheet (Google Forms and Sheets) and website fonts.
• Cloudflare, which hosts this website.

Some of these companies store information outside South Africa. They protect it under their own privacy terms and safeguards. We'll also share information if the law requires us to.

How long we keep it

We keep your details for up to 12 months after we were last in touch, unless you become a Bhuka customer or ask us to delete them sooner.

Keeping it safe

Only Bhuka has access to the details you send us, and the accounts they're kept in are protected with strong passwords and two-step sign-in where available. No system is perfectly secure, but we take reasonable steps to protect your information.

Your rights

Under POPIA you can ask us to:

• tell you what personal information we hold about you,
• correct it or bring it up to date,
• delete it, and
• stop contacting you.

Just message us using the details below. If you're unhappy with how we've handled your information, you can also complain to the Information Regulator of South Africa at inforegulator.org.za.

Children

Bhuka is for businesses. Our forms and messages are not meant for anyone under 18.

Changes to this policy

If we change how we handle personal information, we'll update this page and the date at the top.
